Ingredients

For the brownie layer:

1/2 cup unsalted butter (1 stick)

1 cup granulated sugar

2 large eggs

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1/3 cup unsweetened cocoa powder

1/2 cup all-purpose flour

1/4 teaspoon salt

1/4 teaspoon baking powder

1/2 cup chocolate chips (semisweet or dark)

For the cookie layer:

1/2 cup unsalted butter (1 stick), softened

1/2 cup brown sugar, packed

1/4 cup granulated sugar

1 large egg

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1 1/4 cups all-purpose flour

1/2 teaspoon baking soda

1/4 teaspoon salt

1/2 cup chocolate chips (semisweet or milk)

1/2 cup chopped nuts (optional)

Instructions

Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9x9 inch baking pan or line it with parchment paper for easy removal.

    Make the Brownie Layer:

      - In a medium saucepan, melt the butter over low heat. Remove from heat and stir in sugar, eggs, and vanilla until well combined.

        - Add cocoa powder, flour, salt, and baking powder to the mixture. Mix until just combined and stir in the chocolate chips.

          - Pour the brownie batter into the prepared pan and spread it evenly.

            Prepare the Cookie Layer:

              - In a large mixing bowl, cream together the softened butter, brown sugar, and granulated sugar until light and fluffy.

                - Beat in the egg and vanilla extract until fully incorporated.

                  - In another bowl, whisk together flour, baking soda, and salt. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients until just combined.

                    - Fold in the chocolate chips and nuts, if using.

Combine Layers: Carefully drop spoonfuls of the cookie dough on top of the brownie layer in the pan. You can leave some brownie batter showing for a marbled effect.

Bake: Place the pan in the preheated oven and bake for 25-30 minutes. The edges should be set, but the center might look slightly underbaked; it will continue to cook as it cools.

Cool and Serve: Allow the browkies to cool in the pan for about 15 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack. Once completely cooled, cut into squares and serve!
